Have just phoned AOL helpline....there is an outage on mail and may last another 24 hours, many many many customers are affected.
Have just telephoned and spoken to 3 separate people 1 of whom was a "manager". Have been given no explanation other than there is an "outage". On being pressed the "manager" explained that it was an "unidentified fault that the engineers were working to fix". It only appears to be occurring in certain areas but I see from various discussions on line that similar problems have been occurring for some time! Security issues? My impression was that they were engaged in an exercise to obfuscate and obstruct rather than answering any direct questions put to them.
Their mail server is not responding properly to telnet on port 25 (NO HELO), which is keeping my clients from emailing their contacts who use AOL.
telnet returns this from AOL:
554- (RTR:DU) http://pos
554 Connecting IP: 76.17
Connection to host lost.
The response should have been something like:
220-s10.halnichop.com ESMTP Exim 4.80 #2 Tue, 14 May 2013 08:39:38 -0500
220-We do not authorize the use of this system to transport unsolicited,
220 and/or bulk e-mail.
I am just offering up what I have discovered, I do not plan on returning to this site. Hope your troubles go away soon.
