So I managed to contact an AOL mail help representative via twitter, he told me that my account was blocked for some reason! ( I was getting the "unexpected error" ) he said I'd have to call some number to try and get it unblocked. I really couldn't be bothered so I changed my email on all important things (bank, eBay, PayPal etc) to my gmail.
