Cannot create application online, zip validation doesn't work

When trying to apply online the validation for zip says i have to add a zip + 4 but doesn't allow more than 6 characters in the textbox. Even when I overrode that on the html level it still told me that it can't be more than 4 characters. How could you enforce zip+4 but not give users the ability to enter a zip + 4
