I found a temporary fix in Firefox. You can use what's called "picture in a picture." It windows the screen and whille subtitles don't appear to work in this mode for closed caption, the episode plays without bufering or cutting out to an error message. Sad to see this has been happening since the beginning of the year with no permanent fix though.
