Keep getting message that the server is down and can receive or send no emails

I keep getting message when trying to get access to my recent emails with my bellsouth account (vtownend@bellsouth.net) that the server is disconnected. I have been getting this message since yesterday evening (2/16/15) and it continues until right now (4:50 pm, 2/17/15). What is going on?
