Will not refresh mail keeps telling me server quit responding

i cannot access new mail on either my iPhone or iPad From my AOL address. Smdejohn@aol.com. I've shut my phone and iPad off and turned back on, but nothing is working. It has not been working since 12:37 today ( last email received). It also won't let me delete as it is not updating!
