Website unresponsive when clicking "Place Order"

A dialog box appears:  "Your order is currently being processed.  Please do not leave or refresh the page.  This might take a moment."  A spinning flowererey thingie appears below the text.

This dialog box never goes away ... and the flowerey thingies just keeps spinning and spinning and spinning ...
