Since yesterday (while full backup was in progress) I've been getting a "connecting to backup destination" message. I rebooted twice to no avail. Same message. I didn't change anything from my end

The same happened to me: Crashplan cannot connect to Crashplan Central server since 02-02-2014 02 a.m., so no restore is possible, too. Does somebody know anything more detailed?

Same - CrashPlan Central is unavailable.
