Official reports from DIIGO claim the domain was "stolen". However, WHOIS information does not reflect any change of ownership registration during the time in question. However, the nameservers were switched to AFRAID.ORG on Oct 24, then back to normal on Oct 26. A likely explaination is that attackers gained access DIIGO's account at their domain registrar, and made the DNS changes. The statement that the domain was "stolen", though inaccurate, is good PR because using that word helps to diminish DIIGO's accountability for the insufficient security that resulted in this event. Diigo's implicit denial of accountability weakens the valuable lessons that can be learned, by diigo and by others, from this event.
