3 Days to Picard- CBS- No Access

Mon, 01/20/2020 - 6:24pm - Anonymous

No shows or episodes of the classic series will load.  I get the "Black Screen of Death" with the movie rating in the upper left and an episode time line on the bottom.

I reported this again on Saturday to CBS.  The agents will say all the right words, but nothing is resolved.

I bought this subscription mainly for the Star Trek universe it offered.

My system is a Linux Ubuntu and my main browser is Firefox.

3 days until the new Picard series and I am dead in the water.

Don't know if there are any other LInux users out there - maybe all others have quit their subscriptions and I am the lone survivor.

You're not the lone suvivor, yet. I've tried Chrome and Firefox.  I've manually updated Widevine CDM. Disabling WCDM in Firefox on Windows yields the same behavior (was error 2004, now black screen).

Modifying the User-Agent doesn't help.

I've been back and forth with their "tech" support.  Latest response was "Thank you for getting back to us. We do apologize for any confusion. Linux Operating System is no longer a supported system for CBS All Access. For a full list of supported devices, just visit cbs.com/devices."  I tried to explain this was affecting embedded devices also, like FireStick and some SmartTVs.  They don't seem to get it, or don't care.

Others have stated that the CBSaa channel through Amazon Prime Video works, if you have Prime.

I'll be canceling my subscription before the auto-renewal.

I also have Linux Ubuntu and have called CBS several times about the outage.  This last time I got someone who was willing to be upfront with me.  He said that Linux is not on the list of supported desktops, only Microsoft and Apple OSs.  Linux use was broken, "probably" by accident, but since it wasn't supported there will be no rush to fix it and it may well never be fixed.

This was not good news as I have a massive Linux media computer that I have hooked up to a large TV and use for all streaming and video storage/playback.  Not willing to throw in the towel, I did come up with a workaround.  It's messy, but it works.

I installed Oracle VirtualBox on the Linux machine. Then I used it to create a 32 bit Windows 7 virtual machine that can run inside Linux.  When I want to watch All Access, I start the virtual machine, then start Chrome inside of it and watch CBS from there.  I just watched two episodes of FBI in this manner.  The video is somewhat less smooth than before, but still very watchable and definitely better than nothing.

Hopefully CBS will relent regards Linux, but for the moment this will let me watch Picard.

Like other Linux users, I tried all the easy fixes - different browser, live CD, switching user agents in the browser, etc.  None worked.  I was considereing a Windows VM but was to lazy to try because of the setup time invloved, so thank you to Jason for confirming it works.

I also tried a Chromebook, and it got the same BSoD.  I don't have any Linux based smart TVs or similar streaming devices, so I don't know if those are impacted too.

I intend to get the word out through social media to put pressure on CBS to support Linux.
