Today I called Bank of America and the customer service associate explained that they are phasing out ShopSafe, and they also reduced the number of card numbers we can have open, from 40 to 20.

Elena on

did they say when it will work again?

Actually, its not 20 "open" numbers, its 20 numbers TOTAL, including all numbers you've ever created.

And while the person I spoke with claims they aren't ending the service, this does effectively completely kill its usefulness.

phase out?!?!? ASSSHOLES. I depend on that service for ALL online purcahses. I will NEVER enter the number from a physical credit card on any website.

No on

Actally, if you've ever made a total of more than 20 numbers, you will NEVER be able to generate another. Thats their new rule. This completely defeats the point of the service.

I just confirmed with someone from BofA's technical team 800-933-6262 that ShopSafe is essentially gone for those of us who enrolled in a BofA credit card specifically for that purpose. Once you've used 20 virtual cards, that's it. The rep was clear and helpful in explaining that they don't have any way to reset your count, and mentioned that 47 was the old limit, but their backoffice teams used to reset those counts for customers. Not anymore though.

ShopSafe was the only reason I had this BofA credit card, so it will soon be closed. I've heard Citi has a similar feature. Capital One has a Google add-on that probably works fine if you don't mind being on the same physical device for each purchase, but that's not for me.

I found the same response: 20 cards for the entire life of the account. I easily use that many in a year so it does kill the program.

Still down 4/10, and I have been on hold with customer service for quite a long time.
