My incoming email is fine, but when I try to send or forward an email I keep getting "there was a problem sending the message, try again later". If I attempt to save the message to drafts I get an error message that AOL is unable to. This has been happening sporadically for a week. Very frustrating.

I was having the same problem and solved it by going to Mail-click Mail in upper left hand corner-click on preference-look down the page to outgoing mail server-click the up/down arrow to open stmp selection and click on the one that corresponds with the email addr. you are using. For some reason this works for me. I was selecting AOL as my outgoing server but it didn't work.
I failed to mention the above instructions are for a Macbook Pro
