Aol.com will not connect

I have Internet connection, but cannot access AOL, which is my service provider. I contacted Charter, but they said they have no connection to AOL. Charter did give me the customer service number for AOL, but it turns out you cannot talk to anyone unless you are a paying member of AOL. AOL has been inaccessible all day!
