Same issue here and it's delaying other outbound mail... :(
421 4.2.1 "Service unavailable. Please try again later."
Yup. I've got 3 outbound gateways and all are getting 421 4.2.1"Service unavailable. Please try again later." from AOL.com MX boxes at 10:30am 12/27/13.
Same problem here as of 10:35am eastern 12/27/2013
Our site mail is getting blocked to AOL users....going on Day 3:
421 4.2.1 "Service unavailable. Please try again later."
We checked spam black lists and we ware not listed. :-(
Still have lots of emails with these soft bounces:
Message *********** to ******@aol.com delayed. Reason: 4.3.2 - Not accepting messages at this time (\'421\', [\'4.2.1 "Service unavailable. Please try again later."\']) []
Had this issue yesterday and it cleared up between 2 and 3 AM EST. Not it looks like it is happening again. Started again about 8:30 AM EST today. 421 4.2.1 "Service unavailable. Please try again later." Its delaying 100 + messages to our customers. AOL yesterday told me it was a change to MY rDNS that I had made. Although I have not made any changes in years.
We had the same issue yesterday and today.
same prblm ,
anyone have any solution ??
Still happening for us, across all 4 AOL inbound servers (mailin-01.mx.aol.com through mailin-04.mx.aol.com). We have reverse DNS records in place.
Our mail servers are seeing the exact same thing: the "421 4.2.1 "Service unavailable. Please try again later."" error message that started yesterday, seemed to clear up last night, and started again today. Happening from all our mail servers, to all of AOL's mail servers. We've made no changes.
Dan, how were you able to contact AOL? Did you just use the regular postmaster.aol website? I haven’t been able to get a response from anyone.
Joe,
I did create a support request through their website, listed below. I only got a response once. And have pasted that below as well. They were not much help. I am going to create another one now. I have hundreds of emails backed up to customers. These are back and forth correspondence about current deals too.
I have also Tweeted them as well.
I think I am going to create another request through that page. Although I know they will not respond, they don’t have to. They are big enough and this is obviously only affecting a small percentage of there users.

Hello,
Thank you for contacting AOL postmaster support. This email is concerning the ticket #*****of type "DNS:NR", you opened for following IP(s). Below are the resolution details.
IP: ***.***.***.***
DNS:NR is generated when the connecting IP does not have valid and meaningful reverse DNS. If you have recently set up the reverse DNS please allow 48 hours for the rDNS to get updated in our records. If you are still receiving DNS:NR errors after 48 business hours, please reply to this mail with the latest telnet results from the affected server. Instructions to perform telnet can be found here - http://postmaster.aol.com/Postmaster.Troubleshooting.php#mantelnet
Check the IP's rDNS at this link http://postmaster.aol.com/cgi-bin/plugh/rdns.pl to ensure you have reverse DNS and that it has propagated to the AOL network.
Please submit a new support request if you are receiving any other error/bounce.
*This is a system generated mail. If you have a query, please open a new support request at http://postmaster.aol.com/SupportRequest.php *
Thank You
AOL Postmaster
Experiencing the same thing. Sending to AOL.com is very backed up. 421 error message. Some go through every 30 minutes or so.
I am having the same issues as well as my data center. Seems like a bunch last night went through (after all my users received Warning messages) and I thought it was clear - but having the same problem today. AOL needs to help out somehow here. No blacklists, IP reputations is good, Whitelist added to AOL, PTR records set up - been working nicely for years and we are now having issues. Thanks!
I agree its completely crazy. They have to have changed something on their side. But they will never admit they are having an issue. Although we all know they are.
Actually, they've admitted they're having an issue that they're working to resolve.
Interesting that they would tweet that out under customer support and not under @aolmailhelp...
https://twitter.com/aolmailhelp
Our oragnization is experiencing the same issue for the past 48 - 60 hours with AOL bound email:
421 4.2.1"Service unavailable. Please try again later."
AOL - Away On Lunch.
Come on, guys... pretend to care?
Anyone see any thing happening here? I am still having the issues - Seems like there is no response from AOL at all. I submitted tickets, tweets, checked all the IP reputation, loopback, rDNS, etc, etc... Still nothing going through.. I may forward all my calls to AOL so they can answer my clients...
AOL replyed to a tweet this morning and said that everything we corrected. It apears to be corrected on my side. Although it was working yesterday morning aa well. I dont have anyone sending today so hopefully ita really corrected by monday.
Where did you see that tweet? I am still having major issues. Seems like everyone is getting on their feet but me. Thanks for your help...
Were still having the same problem and I'm begining to think the aol postmaster email account isnt monitored.
Issue is not resolved yet at least for me - I have hundreds of emails in my queue to aol. I think AOL is enjoying the holiday...
Sorry to hear that. Hope it clears up for you and is truely working for me. I will update again Monday when I have users working again.
we were having the same problem on the 27th (12-27-2013), but it looks like mail is flowing now!
Everything seems to be working for me today. Have had a large number of emails sent to AOL.com addresses this morning. I think they have corrected it.
Just wanted to comment, looking for help. I am unable to open or delete any emails either on PC Firefox, IE, or AOL browser. Get the message, service is unavailable, try again later. On Apple devices, popup message that password is incorrect, when it is correct. Wondering if anyone else is having these problems. just started this morning.
hi everyone
seem that problm come back
Our mail servers are seeing the exact same thing: the "421 4.2.1 "Service unavailable....
This issue has been happening again since yesterday morning. Not sure AOL admin even realizes there is a problem. Does anyone have an update on this issue? It seems to me that it's the same problem as Dec 26-28th. 421 Service Unavailable.
I have not had this problem in over a week now. Aol did contact me via Twitter, here is what they had me to try. I was able to read email using the basic version, then it started working normally after that. . http://help.aol.com/article/key/223858
